Let’s be honest here: Writing a new fiction book is no small task. Yes, I know there are eBooks out there claiming to show you how to complete a novel in 30 days, but it can’t be done, at least not by a newcomer to novel writing. Producing 70-odd thousand words is a big enough challenge alone. However, the plan for learning the rules and how to create a new character and all the rest (this is the position of a novice will find their own)…well, let’s just say that two or three years is a more realistic estimate of how long writing a new fiction book will take you.

What is the payback for all this hard work? You can look forward to coming out it?

To be honest, the perks of writing a novel will be different for everyone. For some, making money from their fiction will be the prize they keep their eyes on. For others, it may be to ensure that Hall of Fame (or God help you, celebrities). For many more, the creative challenge alone will be sufficient.

What is the value of the driving force here is mine (and what doesn’t)…

First up, it isn’t the money (honestly!) Not that the riches that a bestselling novel might bring wouldn’t be welcome in my bank account, but I would be lying if I claimed it was money that motivated me to write.

Before that can happen, you face years of hard work with no guarantee whatsoever of publication. And even if your fiction books is published, it is unlikely to be successful enough to enable you to quit the day job (sorry, but those are the cold facts). To put it simply, if fame and fortune are what you seek then novel writing probably isn’t the best train to climb aboard.

The more I work with writers to help them grasp the ins and outs of online book marketing, the more I realize that there are five basic and fundamental mistakes that more than 90% of authors consistently make.

If you don’t fall victim to these five book marketing fiascoes, you’ll be ahead of the pack…far ahead. So, here are five things to avoid when marketing your books online:

1. Flawed Keyword Research

This is the #1 big kahuna and the place where 99% of authors quite simply stuff it up.

Most authors — including the ones I’ve worked with — haven’t had success using the Internet to market their books simply because they don’t approach the process the way someone who’s used to selling things online would do it. Namely, there’s almost never a plan put in place that will allow them to find, target and eventually dominate a set of keywords that are related to their books.

Success online ultimately depends on your ability to determine which keywords are worth targeting, which aren’t, and how much traffic you can expect from what you are going to go after.

2. Lack of Content

Surprisingly, even prolific writers with dozens of books under their belt — gifted authors who can write volumes on their subject — somehow think that they can skate by online with just a couple pages (or even paragraphs!) of content.

Simply not true.

The truth is that Google needs to see lots of content, steadily produced, in order to pay attention to you.

This is exactly why a giant portal like Wikipedia is able to draw so much traffic from Google. Google’s index includes millions of pages from their site.

How many pages would you say are in Google’s index from your site? I would guess that’s somewhere between 2 and 5.

Your name will probably be the only search term that you’ll ever rank for if you have that type of site. Bottom line: you can’t expect to shortchange people on the Internet (or anywhere else) and not have it come back to bite you.

If you want people to find your site online, and you want potential readers (e.g. potential FANS) to care once they get there, make it super clear why they should — give them great, amazing, spectacular content upfront, before you ask them to buy a thing.

3. Not paying attention to Social Marketing and Web 2.0

If you haven’t noticed, the Internet is changing. In just these past few years, sites like Digg, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Squidoo.com, as well as services like Twitter, have revolutionized how we interact online.

Gone is the top-down approach of “yesterday’s” media, which is quickly being replaced by a bottom-up system where real people, not editors, decide what’s hot and what’s not.

If you’re not at least familiar with the sites I mention above — and about 100 others ones that I don’t have time to talk about here — then you’re missing out on some of the greatest places to promote yourself online.

4. Failing to Build a Base of Support

It’s incredible how many authors don’t jump on the most useful online marketing tool there is — the ability to build a base of support and loyal fans through things like mailing lists, or “followers” on Twitter, or subscribers to an RSS feed, or any number of other strategies that traditional Internet marketers use everyday.

This is so important because it’s hard to sell something to someone who has no idea who you are, but it’s easy to sell something to someone who already knows your work.

When someone buys your book, they become the ideal candidate to buy anything you write in the future.

But if you have no way to reach the people who bought your first book, you’re going to have to go through the entire “customer-acquisition” process each and every time for every new book.

Wouldn’t you say it would be a lot easier to just send an email or two to your existing fans?

Or just to write a blog post that announces a new book?

This is the way authors build empires.

5. Focusing Too Much on the Sale

Huh? That’s a mistake? But isn’t that the point?

Yes and no.

So here’s what I’m arguing: If you focus just on “moving product” (i.e. on selling books now) and ignore the other stuff you should be doing (see #4 above), you’re not going to be putting enough effort into building a real presence, and a loyal following, online. But it’s that very loyal following that can be counted on to buy many thousands of books time and time again.

Which is better, getting people to buy a couple of books per day now, or getting crowds of people to buy thousands of books every day 12 months from now?

You shouldn’t be struggling.

There’s no reason why you can’t build an information empire the same way thousands of Internet marketers have done. You might want to think about how you could benefit if you stopped trying to just sell one or two books every now and then. Start focusing on getting great content out to the people who need your book.

Sales (at a level you would have never imagined before!) will inevitably follow.

If you can’t say that you’re making a full-time income from selling informaiton online, then you must be doing something wrong.

I know for a fact that at least 90% of authors make vital — but completely avoidable — errors when trying to market books online.
